Be the calm second Chicken!

Here’s a fun anecdote for you! A study was conducted on chickens to see how they react to fear. The researchers gave a chicken a fright and timed how long it took for it to calm down.

They then repeated the experiment, but this time, the chicken was given a scare while it could either see another chicken that had been given a scare or one that was calm and relaxed.

The results were fascinating! The chicken that was looking at the calm chicken calmed down the fastest of all.

This study has an important message for dog owners: if you have a young or anxious dog, it will take its lead from you in situations where it’s unsure of itself. So, make sure you’re the “calm second chicken” and set an example for your furry friend!

Oh, my dog knows well how to Sit, Stay, and Go to Bed, but there’s a catch: they’ll only do it when they want to.

Sound familiar? It’s a common complaint among dog owners, and the reason behind it might surprise you.

Let’s dive into the fascinating world of canine psychology.

            Dogs are

           associative learners

, which means they pick up cues from their environment and associate them with specific actions. When you say “Sit,” ideally your dog hears that word and promptly plants their furry behind on the ground. Simple, right?

But here’s where things get interesting.

Sometimes, our four-legged friends make unexpected connections. Imagine this: You’re reaching for a treat in your pocket while saying “Sit.” Your dog, ever the astute observer, thinks, “Ah, treat time! Better sit!” And just like that, they’ve linked your hand movement with the command.

           Or perhaps it’s even subtler.

You stand a little taller, your posture stiffens imperceptibly, and your dog—telepathically, it seems—knows what’s expected before you utter a word. It’s like they’ve mastered the art of mind-reading.

Consistency is key, but so is self-awareness.

If you unknowingly pair a specific gesture with a command, your dog might prioritize the gesture over your verbal cue. Suddenly, “Sit” becomes a mysterious hand signal, and your dog’s stubbornness kicks in. Who knew our pets were such detectives?

So, next time you’re about to scold your dog for being obstinate, pause and reflect.

Look in the mirror and ask yourself, “What if my dog is doing EXACTLY what I’ve unintentionally taught them?” Maybe they’re not stubborn; they’re just following the cues we’ve unwittingly given.

Remember, our furry companions are brilliant learners, and sometimes, they’re one step ahead of us.

So, embrace their quirks, celebrate their intelligence, and keep those treats handy—just in case your dog decides it’s time for another mind-reading session!

Let Your Dog Teach You To Slow Down

We're all in a rush, every day rushing here and there, giving lifts, doing the weekly shop, chasing the clock with a list of jobs to do running through your head.

You’re rushing through the day go go go.

Let the time that you walk your dog be the time when you slow down and take a breather. There is the saying “stop and smell the roses”, well your dog can teach you how to slow down, take in the world and just be in the moment.

           So...Stop.....and smell those roses!
